Los Glaciers National Park, Patagonia

This is a six day stay, three nights in El Calafate on the southern section visiting the area of Glacier Perito Moreno and environs and three nights in the north section in El Chalten visiting Glacier Viedma and Mount Fitz Roy. Geoff and I decided to hit the ground running and took a coach to the boardwalks facing the Perito Moreno to witness the power of this glacier as it moves towards you at a steady pace. At the face it is between 60 and 100 metres high, consisting of jagged crevices compacted to form ice blocks in a variety of deep blues. These "detonate" causing you to jump the first time you here them. Such deep piercing, penetrating sounds, something like a Peine hammer hitting an anvil followed by a sledgehammer before what seems like slow motion as tons of ice crash into the river before resurfacing as an iceberg. For a few minutes the ice at break point is deep marbled blue before the cold frosts it over. We spent two and a half hours here in total awe, amazing
.

Tons of ice crashing down to form icebergs as the ice face advances.

Some ugly bug on the glacier....I was there !!

A view from afar showing the glacier meeting the river.

Ice cave.

Then onto a boat which took you even closer to the ice flow before crossing the Brazo Rico river and landing on the west side of the glacier. From here it was a trek through beautiful forests following the glacier inland and finally donning crampons to complete a two hour trek across the ice flow, truly fantastic, rivers, ice caves, fissures, splits, cracks totally mind blowing. Returned to base totally worn out, having caught the sun from the reflection off the ice, but totally happy we had completed
something spectacular. A nice touch to the end of the trek was a large Jamesons with ice freshly carved from the glacier, it can't get much better than that !!!! Well it did actually went to a local grill
had a massive steak n chips, a litre bottle of beer all for under a tenner, steak was more like half a
cow was beautiful.

  1. I thought you said you would lose some weight on this trip Tony! You will have to buy some larger clobber with the amount of steaks you are eating.
